Michael, founder of Play Music From Within

About

Hi, I'm Michael — the musician, teacher, scientist, and developer behind Play Music From Within. I've been learning music since I was five, and I started teaching early in life as well. I helped out in the primary school where my mum was a music teacher when I was ten. I began earning money teaching other children before I left school. Curious about how learning works, I studied it and earned a PhD in the neuroscience of learning. Eager to apply that knowledge in my favourite domain, I became a professional music teacher in 2010.

This platform started as a convenient tool I built for my own students. I strongly believe that ear training is one of the most important skills for musicians, and I made it fun for my students during lessons. However, I realised they couldn't practise it at home, because it needs either a second person or a good tool. The ear trainers I could find were dull, overcomplicated, and gave no real sense of progress, which led me to develop Key Commander. Then Audiation Studio, as a more serious tool, and finally Melody Bricks, which sits somewhere in between — it teaches classical interval recognition, but in a fun way.

I added a system that let me give my students assignments and monitor their progress. Then I added a scale trainer and more training tools for theory and notation, until my platform grew into something bigger than I'd planned — a place for teachers and students to learn the hard skills of music the easy way.
